Chapter 13

Evie had been scheduled to leave Aurora Springs four weeks after she’d arrived, and while she could have wrapped up clearing out her grandfather’s house, she’d been dragging that particular task out because she hadn’t been ready to depart just yet.

The reason for her reluctance to head back to Houston was a certain hazel-eyed cowboy who still had the ability to make her heart flutter when he looked at her, and so she’d had a long conversation with her boss back in Texas.

Sean Campbell had agreed to let her work remotely for another month after some discussion and a promise from Evie she would return to Houston immediately if a situation with any of her clients arose that required it, and she agreed to check in with him on a regular basis to give him progress reports.

She knew she was pushing her luck with Sean, asking for another month’s grace, but she’d been a devoted employee of the company since she’d left college, which counted for something, and she wasn’t ready to leave her hometown just yet.

Wasn’t ready to let go of Luke, and whatever was burning brighter between them every day.

The front door of the cabin suddenly flung open wide, the back of it smacking against the wall. Evie, who’d been deep in concentration, was so startled she let out a loud cry.

“Honey, I’m home!” Luke gave her a wide grin as he closed the door behind him and came toward her.

She placed a hand on her chest, her heart beating wildly beneath it. “You scared the bejeezus out of me.”

“I’m sorry, darlin’.”

She tipped her face up for his kiss and his lips lingered on hers. “Did you get everything done at the barn?”

“Yep. All the furniture and decorations are in place, the tables are set, and all we need to do tomorrow is arrange the flowers when they arrive.”

“Awesome. I’ll come help tomorrow with the flowers.”

The Whittakers were hosting their first wedding of the year the following day, and Evie was excited to witness it. She’d offered to help out with serving meals and drinks, which a grateful Diana had accepted.

“Did you finish working on your project?”

She brushed a kiss over his lips. “I did, actually. Want to see?”

Luke took off his jacket and threw it over the back of the couch, then rolled up his sleeves. “Absolutely. Show me.” He stood behind her, slid his arms around her waist, and peered over her shoulder.

She picked up her tablet, opened her design program and brought up the logo she’d been working hard on. After a few moments, she turned her head to look at him.

“Wow.” He kissed her shoulder. “It’s fantastic. I love the colors.” There was a pause. “Hang on a minute. Are you starting your own business?”

She put down the tablet again and turned in his arms to face him. They’d talked about the idea of Evie becoming a freelance graphic designer. She certainly had the skill to blaze her own path and go out
